La question tr\u00e8s m\u00e9diatis\u00e9e des restitutions (Sarr &amp; Savoy 2018), ou les projets de d\u00e9colonisation (Lee 2022, Verg\u00e8s 2023) plus ou moins opportunistes, ont pris le relais des d\u00e9bats sur les changements de noms des mus\u00e9es (Caldwell 2000, Stallabras 2014&#160;; plus largement Stocking 1971). Cette actualit\u00e9 publique et m\u00e9diatique cache le fait que ces mus\u00e9es ont fait depuis longtemps (Stocking 1985) et contin\u00fbment l\u2019objet d\u2019enqu\u00eates d\u2019historiens et d\u2019historiennes, mais aussi \u2013\u00a0l\u2019ethnographie \u00e9tant une discipline qui valorise la r\u00e9flexivit\u00e9\u00a0\u2013 d\u2019ethnographes (par exemple Gonseth, Hainhard, Kaehr 2002) et d\u2019associations professionnelles des mus\u00e9es (Deutscher Museumsbund 2021).<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte\">Cette importante production, entre autres historiographique, a permis d\u2019explorer de tr\u00e8s nombreuses dimensions de ces institutions. En se limitant aux publications les plus r\u00e9centes, deux axes peuvent \u00eatre distingu\u00e9s. D\u2019une part, la dimension coloniale des mus\u00e9es ethnographiques \u2013 et l\u2019expression du souhait de leur d\u00e9colonisation \u2013 est d\u00e9sormais tr\u00e8s document\u00e9e, avec plus ou moins de finesse (par exemple&#160;: Bennett <em>et al<\/em>. 2016, Turner 2020, Hicks 2020). Il en va de m\u00eame des travaux qui examinent la contestation par les populations locales des savoirs \u00e9labor\u00e9s au mus\u00e9e (Larson 2015, Glass 2018) ou les mus\u00e9es hors du Nord global (Berthon 2018, Bondaz, Frioux Salgas 2022). D\u2019autre part, de tr\u00e8s nombreux travaux ont \u00e9tudi\u00e9 les mus\u00e9es comme centres de traduction et lieux d\u2019accumulation de mat\u00e9riel (Brydon 2019, Mushynsky 2023), ce qui a conduit \u00e0 analyser les modes de collecte, de transfert et de mise en \u00e9criture des collections (voir Gonseth, Hainard, Kaehr 2002, Gonseth, Knodel, Reubi 2010, Smetzer 2015, Petrou 2016, Brusius 2017, Achim, Deans-Smith Rozental, 2021), voire \u00e0 s\u2019interroger sur la pertinence des partages (institutionnels, th\u00e9matiques, chronologiques) \u00e9tablis entre les objets par les institutions mus\u00e9ales et pouvoirs publics (Delpuech 2018). Enfin, les recherches sur l\u2019histoire des institutions elles-m\u00eames sont aujourd\u2019hui nombreuses et proposent des approches crois\u00e9es comme en t\u00e9moignent, entre autres, les travaux les plus r\u00e9cents sur le mus\u00e9e d\u2019Ethnographie du Trocad\u00e9ro, le mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Homme (Blanckaert 2015, Conklin 2015, Loyau 2022) ou le Mus\u00e9um national d\u2019histoire naturelle (Hurel, Blanckaert 2022).<\/p>\n<p class=\"texte\">Dans ce paysage dense, la <em>Revue d\u2019histoire des sciences humaines <\/em>souhaite \u00e9largir la perspective en examinant les mus\u00e9es des disciplines de l\u2019anthropologie g\u00e9n\u00e9rale (ethnographie, pr\u00e9histoire, anthropologie physique et linguistique) et des disciplines voisines (histoire de l\u2019art, folklore, sociologie), y compris celles qui ne s\u2019appuient que rarement sur les institutions mus\u00e9ales (g\u00e9ographie, psychologie), voire des institutions hybrides, sur le plan du fond disciplinaire et du projet mus\u00e9ologique, du type \u00e9comus\u00e9es et autres centres d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation (Debary 2002, Corrias, Le\u00a0Foll, M\u00f6ello 2020). \u00c0 travers cet objet et sa prise en compte appr\u00e9hend\u00e9e par l\u2019historiographie \u00e0 hauteur des acteurs (Bergeron, Debary, Mairesse 2020) et en portant une attention soutenue aux pratiques et \u00e0 leur mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 scientifique et mus\u00e9ologique, les \u00e9diteurs de ce num\u00e9ro appellent les contributeurs \u00e0 se concentrer sur trois dossiers peu document\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"texte\">1. Le nom comme \u00e9tendard<\/h2>\n<p class=\"texte\">Dans la suite des programmes lexicographiques de George Stocking ou Claude Blanckaert et du dossier \u00ab&#160;Nommer les savoirs&#160;\u00bb de la <em>Revue d\u2019histoire des sciences humaines <\/em>(n\u00b0\u00a037, 2020), les \u00e9diteurs de ce volume appellent de leurs v\u0153ux des travaux sur l\u2019histoire des noms donn\u00e9s aux mus\u00e9es de sciences humaines ainsi qu\u2019aux espaces qu\u2019ils h\u00e9bergent et jusqu\u2019aux objets de leurs collections. Les termes choisis au moment de la fondation des mus\u00e9es signalent en effet des arri\u00e8re-plans que l\u2019historiographie a parfois oubli\u00e9s. On pense aux mus\u00e9es d\u2019ethnographie et de g\u00e9ographie commerciale, mais aussi aux requalifications qui effacent le terme \u00ab&#160;ethnographie&#160;\u00bb (mus\u00e9e de l\u2019Homme, en 1937, mais surtout la longue et r\u00e9cente s\u00e9rie des \u00ab&#160;nouveaux&#160;\u00bb anciens mus\u00e9es (MQB, Humboldt Forum, Museum der f\u00fcnf Kontinente, etc.). Le r\u00f4le des acteurs et actrices scientifiques, politiques ou militants, pourra y \u00eatre examin\u00e9, ainsi que les modalit\u00e9s sp\u00e9cifiques de l\u2019invention et de la circulation de terminologies nouvelles, les rythmes partag\u00e9s ou au contraire particuliers de ces mouvements. On pourra aussi s\u2019interroger sur les requalifications apparemment inoffensives (mus\u00e9es d\u2019ethnographie ou mus\u00e9e ethnographique, collection de pr\u00e9histoire ou collection pr\u00e9historique, Museum f\u00fcr Ethnografie ou V\u00f6lkerkundemuseum\u2026). De m\u00eame, seront bienvenues les contributions portant sur les disciplines dont le nom n\u2019appara\u00eet jamais au frontispice des mus\u00e9es (sociologie, psychologie, linguistique, g\u00e9ographie) alors qu\u2019elles y sont trait\u00e9es. Les noms donn\u00e9s aux diff\u00e9rents espaces d\u2019une institution (d\u00e9partement, auditoire, salles, ailes, biblioth\u00e8que\u2026) ont \u00e9galement connu des transformations r\u00e9guli\u00e8res qui ont suscit\u00e9 r\u00e9serves, oppositions et parfois indiff\u00e9rence. Ces noms, marqu\u00e9s par la stabilit\u00e9 m\u00eame ou par des d\u00e9nominations changeantes, contribuent, comme celui donn\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019institution, \u00e0 fa\u00e7onner l\u2019imaginaire symbolique, scientifique et politique associ\u00e9 aux mus\u00e9es et pourraient \u00e9galement faire l\u2019objet d\u2019enqu\u00eates. On pourra aussi s\u2019int\u00e9resser aux tutelles minist\u00e9rielles qui chapeautent un mus\u00e9e et dont les choix orientent ses missions et son identit\u00e9. Enfin, la question de la modification du nom d\u2019un objet ou d\u2019une cat\u00e9gorie d\u2019items pour des motifs savants ou profanes occupe les mus\u00e9es depuis longtemps. Leur renouvellement actuel (von Oswald 2023) constitue l\u2019occasion de s\u2019interroger sur les usages, voire l\u2019utilit\u00e9 du mus\u00e9e (lieu de documentation de pratiques savantes pass\u00e9es, lieu de production et de transmission de savoirs contemporains).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"texte\">2. R\u00e9partir les collections<\/h2>\n<p class=\"texte\">Comme l\u2019ont montr\u00e9, entre autres les travaux de Ventkateswaran (2020), les collections ne sont pas li\u00e9es pour l\u2019\u00e9ternit\u00e9 aux institutions qui les h\u00e9bergent pour un temps. Elles circulent parfois, d\u2019un mus\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019autre, voire au sein de l\u2019institution elle-m\u00eame au fil des reconfigurations institutionnelles et disciplinaires, d\u2019un pays \u00e0 l\u2019autre ou d\u2019un type d\u2019institution \u00e0 un autre. C\u2019est particuli\u00e8rement vrai des disciplines des sciences humaines, parfois intimement, institutionnellement ou politiquement li\u00e9es les unes ou autres (ethnographie, arch\u00e9ologie, pr\u00e9histoire, folklore, linguistique, g\u00e9ographie, histoire de l\u2019art, etc.). Elles peuvent aussi se rapporter \u00e0 plusieurs syst\u00e8mes de repr\u00e9sentations et les objets qui s\u2019y rattachent peuvent basculer d\u2019un domaine \u00e0 l\u2019autre et m\u00eame, comme le montrent diff\u00e9rentes propositions sur le transfert de collections aupr\u00e8s des populations sources, reprendre hypoth\u00e9tiquement le cours de la vie de l\u2019objet d\u2019avant le mus\u00e9e. Les \u00e9diteurs porteront un int\u00e9r\u00eat particulier aux propositions portant sur la r\u00e9partition des objets d\u2019une m\u00eame collection entre plusieurs mus\u00e9es, mais aussi sur la circulation de collections inter et intra-institutionnelle, tout comme sur la relation entre l\u2019espace mus\u00e9al, la collection et le discours savant (Mandressi, 2007). Inversement, le maintien de collections, de <em>naturalia<\/em>, de restes humains, de collections pr\u00e9historiques, \u00e9gyptologiques, linguistiques dans un mus\u00e9e d\u2019ethnographie constitue un contre-exemple instructif d\u2019une p\u00e9rennit\u00e9 d\u2019agencements originels ne prenant pas en compte de nouvelles configurations scientifiques ou mus\u00e9ales. Les contributions s\u2019appuyant sur l\u2019examen de la mat\u00e9rialit\u00e9 des objets (palimpseste, para-objets, technologie de papier, etc.) seront privil\u00e9gi\u00e9es. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle institutionnelle, l\u2019histoire de la r\u00e9partition des collections au moment de la constitution de mus\u00e9es disciplinaires \u00e0 partir de mus\u00e9es g\u00e9n\u00e9ralistes permet de retracer le mouvement et les relations des disciplines ou sp\u00e9cialisations. Hors du domaine des mus\u00e9es, le jeu entre centres d\u2019artisanat traditionnel, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9s dans les \u00ab&#160;nations nouvelles&#160;\u00bb des ann\u00e9es 1960, et mus\u00e9es, ou entre institutions religieuses, communautaires et scientifiques donne \u00e9galement l\u2019occasion de suivre la biographie des objets et des collections apr\u00e8s le mus\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"texte\">3. La mus\u00e9ologie comme science humaine<\/h2>\n<p class=\"texte\">Dans le paysage des sciences humaines, la mus\u00e9ologie fait office de nouvelle entrante et l\u2019historiographie a pu avoir tendance \u00e0 examiner l\u2019histoire des mus\u00e9es au prisme seul de la discipline qui les occupe. Des revues comme <em>Museums Journal <\/em>(1902) <em>Museumskunde <\/em>(1905), ou <em>Mouseion <\/em>(1927) signalent pourtant qu\u2019elle conna\u00eet une profondeur historique et une diversit\u00e9 g\u00e9ographique importantes, qui ont pu influencer ces pratiques scientifiques particuli\u00e8res que sont les pratiques mus\u00e9ales. Elle pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement des vari\u00e9t\u00e9s disciplinaires mal connues que les mus\u00e9es en sciences humaines contribuent \u00e0 saisir. Partag\u00e9e entre exigences sp\u00e9cifiquement disciplinaires, sciences de la sc\u00e8ne, sciences de la conservation, droit, architecture (d\u2019int\u00e9rieur), programmes scientifiques et politiques, p\u00e9dagogie, la mus\u00e9ologie constitue une discipline de fusion, qui a parfois \u00e9t\u00e9 assimil\u00e9e \u00e0 un programme interdisciplinaire et qui m\u00e9rite d\u2019\u00eatre mieux connu que les quelques enqu\u00eates ponctuelles existantes (p. ex. Gorgus 2003, Berkowitz &amp; Lightman 2017).
