L\u2019anthropologie sociale et l\u2019anthropologie linguistique ont tout particuli\u00e8rement profit\u00e9 des apports structuralistes de Claude L\u00e9vi-Strauss<a name=\"_ednref1\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn1\">[1]<\/a> et linguistiques de Roman Jakobson<a name=\"_ednref2\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn2\">[2]<\/a>. D\u00e8s son \u00e9tablissement en tant que discipline, l\u2019anthropologie s\u2019est confront\u00e9e \u00e0 la question de l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation de signes \u00e9trangers, au probl\u00e8me de leur traduction et aux diff\u00e9rentes mani\u00e8res socialement, historiquement et g\u00e9ographiquement situ\u00e9es d\u2019interpr\u00e9ter ces m\u00eames signes. Intimement li\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019approche linguistique, cette question fut notamment trait\u00e9e \u00e0 travers la formulation de l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se Sapir-Whorf<a name=\"_ednref3\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn3\">[3]<\/a>. Cependant, l\u2019anthropologie n\u2019est sans doute vraiment devenue s\u00e9miotique qu\u2019\u00e0 partir des travaux pionniers de Clifford Geertz<a name=\"_ednref4\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn4\">[4]<\/a>, qui prennent toute la mesure des notions de positionnement, de description et d\u2019interpr\u00e9tation. D\u00e8s 1975, Michael Silverstein parle d\u2019une \u00ab&#160;transformation de l\u2019anthropologie en s\u00e9miotique<a name=\"_ednref5\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn5\">[5]<\/a>&#160;\u00bb, en insistant cependant davantage sur la dimension indexicale que symbolique dans l\u2019analyse de la culture<a name=\"_ednref6\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn6\">[6]<\/a>. Geertz et Silverstein ont ainsi plant\u00e9 les graines du \u00ab&#160;tournant linguistique&#160;\u00bb qui allait suivre au cours des ann\u00e9es 1980. Des chercheurs commencent \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque \u00e0 poser un regard r\u00e9flexif sur la pratique d\u2019\u00e9criture ethnographique en s\u2019appropriant un certain nombre d\u2019outils ou de mod\u00e8les issus des \u00e9tudes litt\u00e9raires et de la th\u00e9orie critique<a name=\"_ednref7\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn7\">[7]<\/a>. Parfois aussi qualifi\u00e9 de \u00ab&#160;rh\u00e9torique&#160;\u00bb, \u00ab&#160;litt\u00e9raire&#160;\u00bb, \u00ab&#160;\u00e9thique&#160;\u00bb ou \u00ab&#160;postmoderne&#160;\u00bb, ce tournant au sein de la discipline anthropologique fait l\u2019objet, depuis une dizaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, d\u2019un certain regain d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat sous la forme d\u2019un retour \u00e0 la \u00ab&#160;th\u00e9orie ethnographique\u00a0<a name=\"_ednref8\"><\/a>&#160;\u00bb<a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn8\">[8]<\/a>, avec un accent mis sur l\u2019ontologie, la relation et les mondes de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience<a name=\"_ednref9\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn9\">[9]<\/a>. Dans l\u2019universit\u00e9 francophone, les r\u00e9percussions de ce tournant sont visibles notamment dans la mouvance de l\u2019anthropologie r\u00e9flexive<a name=\"_ednref10\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn10\">[10]<\/a>. Toutes ces recherches s\u2019inscrivent, de pr\u00e8s ou de loin, dans le sillon des \u00e9crits s\u00e9minaux de Peirce sur le signe, qui irriguent en profondeur les approches pragmatistes en sciences humaines et sociales<a name=\"_ednref11\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn11\">[11]<\/a>. L\u2019ethnom\u00e9thodologie de Garfinkel tire profit de l\u2019indexicalit\u00e9<a name=\"_ednref12\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn12\">[12]<\/a>. L\u2019ethnographie de la communication se montre sensible \u00e0 l\u2019interpr\u00e9tation situ\u00e9e des pratiques communicationnelles en fonction des diverses communaut\u00e9s de sens<a name=\"_ednref13\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn13\">[13]<\/a>. Plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, l\u2019interactionnisme symbolique fonde l\u2019action sociale dans le sens commun, ce qui pose \u00e0 nouveau l\u2019action des signes et leurs effets au c\u0153ur de l\u2019enqu\u00eate socio- ou anthropologique<a name=\"_ednref14\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn14\">[14]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mais l\u2019abord s\u00e9miotique de la culture n\u2019est pas le propre de l\u2019anthropologie. Juri Lotman, avec son concept de s\u00e9miosph\u00e8re<a name=\"_ednref15\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn15\">[15]<\/a>, a pos\u00e9 les fondements d\u2019une s\u00e9miotique de la culture qui continue d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 Tartu<a name=\"_ednref16\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn16\">[16]<\/a>. Avant lui, Roland Barthes, avec ses <em>Mythologies<\/em>, a su inaugurer un certain regard critique sur des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes culturels de son temps<a name=\"_ednref17\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn17\">[17]<\/a>. De nombreux chercheurs leur ont embo\u00eet\u00e9 le pas&#160;: Irene Portis Winner<a name=\"_ednref18\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn18\">[18]<\/a>, Monica Rector<a name=\"_ednref19\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn19\">[19]<\/a>, Milton Singer<a name=\"_ednref20\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn20\">[20]<\/a>, Paul Bouissac<a name=\"_ednref21\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn21\">[21]<\/a>, Elizabeth Mertz<a name=\"_ednref22\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn22\">[22]<\/a> ou Richard Parmentier<a name=\"_ednref23\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn23\">[23]<\/a>, par exemple. Le mariage toujours imparfait entre l\u2019anthropologie et la s\u00e9miotique a des racines nombreuses. Bakhtine et Volochinov, tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t, ont li\u00e9 discours et id\u00e9ologie<a name=\"_ednref24\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn24\">[24]<\/a>. Ce rapport \u00e9troit a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 revisit\u00e9 par Eliseo Ver\u00f3n<a name=\"_ednref25\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn25\">[25]<\/a> et plus r\u00e9cemment par Judith Irvine et Susan Gal<a name=\"_ednref26\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn26\">[26]<\/a> et par Webb Keane<a name=\"_ednref27\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn27\">[27]<\/a>. L\u2019ethnos\u00e9miotique a \u00e9t\u00e9 envisag\u00e9e d\u00e8s 1979 par Greimas et Court\u00e9s<a name=\"_ednref28\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn28\">[28]<\/a>, mais celle-ci n\u2019a pas donn\u00e9 lieu \u00e0 des d\u00e9veloppement bien concrets. Or depuis 2015, le Centro Universitario Bolognese di Etnosemiotica (CUBE), sous la direction de Francesco Marsciani, publie en italien la revue <em>Quaderni di Etnosemiotica<\/em><a name=\"_ednref29\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn29\">[29]<\/a>. Depuis 2013, la revue am\u00e9ricano-cor\u00e9enne <em>Signs and Society <\/em>dirig\u00e9e par Asif Agha se positionne clairement \u00e0 l\u2019intersection des sciences sociales et des \u00e9tudes s\u00e9miotiques<a name=\"_ednref30\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn30\">[30]<\/a>. En 2020, la revue <em>Actes s\u00e9miotiques<\/em> publiait un dossier \u00ab&#160;S\u00e9miotique et anthropologie&#160;\u00bb dans lequel Ludovic Chatenet et Angelo Di Caterino ont produit une int\u00e9ressante synth\u00e8se<a name=\"_ednref31\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn31\">[31]<\/a>. Celui-ci faisait suite \u00e0 un dossier pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent dirig\u00e9 par Nicolas Cou\u00e9gnas, dans lequel Aurore Famy et Carlo Andrea Tassinari ont propos\u00e9 une lecture s\u00e9miotique de quelques ouvrages de Bruno Latour<a name=\"_ednref32\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn32\">[32]<\/a>, revisitant ainsi \u00ab&#160;l\u2019anthropologie des Modernes&#160;\u00bb de ce dernier. Au cours des derni\u00e8res d\u00e9cennies, l\u2019\u00e9tude approfondie des rapports entre cultures humaines et environnements a donn\u00e9 lieux \u00e0 des travaux novateurs et marquants<a name=\"_ednref33\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/calenda.org\/1020554#_edn33\">[33]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 d\u2019un regard port\u00e9 sur les domaines intellectuels avoisinants, et sans nous en tenir \u00e0 la tentation d\u2019une nouvelle suture interdisciplinaire, la question aujourd\u2019hui est de savoir comment les \u00e9tudes s\u00e9miotiques et l\u2019anthropologie, conjointement, peuvent se d\u00e9terminer un m\u00eame objet d\u2019\u00e9tude. Si l\u2019anthropologie \u00e9tudie l\u2019humain, les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s et les cultures humaines, elle multiplie pour ce faire ses focales, ses m\u00e9thodes, ses approches et ses vis\u00e9es, se penchant tant sur le processus biologique d\u2019hominisation et les vestiges arch\u00e9ologiques des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s pass\u00e9es que sur la dimension symbolique des \u00e9changes (mat\u00e9riels, discursifs) et les diverses pratiques culturelles contemporaines. De leur c\u00f4t\u00e9, les \u00e9tudes s\u00e9miotiques traitent des signes et des m\u00e9diations au moyen desquels les \u00eatres vivants communiquent, interpr\u00e8tent et organisent le monde symbolique et pratique dans lequel ils \u00e9voluent au quotidien. En restreignant l\u2019objet de la s\u00e9miotique \u00e0 la sph\u00e8re d\u2019influence de l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine, et en consid\u00e9rant l\u2019activit\u00e9 signifiante comme base de toute interaction humaine, nous posons que signe et sens commun forment un seuil pour l\u2019\u00e9tude des pratiques et des cultures humaines. Ainsi posons-nous que l\u2019objet d\u2019\u00e9tude commun \u00e0 l\u2019anthropologie et aux \u00e9tudes s\u00e9miotiques sont les <em>signes humains<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019un signe humain&#160;? Une fa\u00e7on simple de d\u00e9finir les signes humains serait de dire qu\u2019ils sont l\u2019expression de l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine. Les humains n\u2019existent jamais qu\u2019en interagissant (avec autrui, avec des machines, avec leur environnement, avec leur propre conscience, voire avec leur inconscient), et cette interaction s\u2019effectue forc\u00e9ment au moyen de signes, mais aussi \u00e0 travers des sch\u00e8mes de repr\u00e9sentation\u00a0(ou m\u00e9tasignes) \u2013 qui vont de la cosmologie au diagramme technique, de l\u2019\u00e9goportrait \u00e0 l\u2019imaginaire national, du syst\u00e8me de la langue \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience, des lois \u00e9dict\u00e9es aux tabous tus. Ces sch\u00e8mes de repr\u00e9sentation, que l\u2019on pourrait aussi appeler interpr\u00e9tants ou univers de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, sont comme des interfaces entre le monde sensible, perceptible subjectivement, et le monde pratique, entendu au sens commun&#160;; ils rendent possible leur superposition en normalisant les signes qui se pr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 l\u2019entendement. Toute l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine, individuelle et collective, est r\u00e9gie par ces univers de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence (d\u2019ailleurs pas toujours coh\u00e9rents entre eux) qui fournissent \u00e0 l\u2019agentivit\u00e9 les points de rep\u00e8res dont elle ne saurait se passer. De fa\u00e7on g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, dans les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s humaines, on consid\u00e9rera que l\u2019ensemble de la production s\u00e9miotique, dont la forme arch\u00e9typale est l\u2019\u00e9change, participe d\u2019une dynamique culturelle situ\u00e9e et d\u00e9coule d\u2019une certaine disposition \u00e0 l\u2019action, ou habitus, et qu\u2019en ce sens elle est l\u2019expression d\u2019une s\u00e9miose complexe et g\u00e9n\u00e9rative de sens (parfois coh\u00e9rent et parfois d\u00e9routant) pour la communaut\u00e9. Ainsi con\u00e7us, les signes apparaissent autant comme des vecteurs d\u2019organisation sociale que de d\u00e9litement possible des groupes. D\u00e9finir les signes humains comme l\u2019expression de l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine permet d\u2019indexer la signification \u00e0 l\u2019ensemble des activit\u00e9s ou op\u00e9rations ayant pour objet la production et l\u2019\u00e9change, libres ou contraints, mais aussi l\u2019organisation et la coercition au sein des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s et des groupes humains. En outre, s\u2019ils ont souvent une vis\u00e9e performative imm\u00e9diate, les signes humains ont aussi un effet d\u00e9lay\u00e9 et diffus&#160;: celui d\u2019exprimer et de produire une identit\u00e9 collective ou un ethos historique.<\/p>\n<p>Cet appel invite les chercheurs\u00b7euses \u0153uvrant en s\u00e9miotique, en anthropologie ou dans des disciplines connexes\u00a0(ethnologie, linguistique, sociologie, arts et lettres, communication, traduction, \u00e9tudes autochtones, etc.) \u00e0 partager leurs recherches et travaux sur les signes humains. Nous int\u00e9ressent&#160;: les pratiques s\u00e9miotiques ordinaires, politiques ou artistiques, et plus largement les syst\u00e8mes de signes, de croyances et l\u2019implication des axiologies sur la production, les \u00e9changes et la circulation des biens symboliques dans l\u2019espace public, au sein des groupes humains et entre eux, les m\u00e9thodes d\u2019enqu\u00eate en vue d\u2019\u00e9tudier de tels ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes aussi bien que les excursions th\u00e9oriques qui en d\u00e9coulent.
