Langages de l\u2019Art, le philosophe Nelson Goodman identifie deux principales voies de la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence&#160;: la d\u00e9notation et l\u2019exemplification. Un symbole d\u00e9note quelque chose dans le monde lorsqu\u2019il y fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence. Le mot \u00ab&#160;bleu&#160;\u00bb d\u00e9signe l\u2019ensemble des choses bleues. Un symbole exemplifie au contraire une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 lorsqu\u2019il poss\u00e8de r\u00e9ellement cette propri\u00e9t\u00e9 et qu\u2019il y renvoie (i.e. lorsque la possession de cette propri\u00e9t\u00e9 n\u2019est pas purement accidentelle). Par exemple, le symbole verbal rouge exemplifie la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre rouge, d\u2019\u00eatre en fran\u00e7ais et en Palatino Linotype bien qu\u2019il ne d\u00e9note pas les choses rouges, les mots fran\u00e7ais ou une police particuli\u00e8re. Les images comme les mots ou les \u00e9tiquettes verbales peuvent d\u00e9noter ou exemplifier des choses et des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s. Le portrait de Machiavel par Santi di Tito d\u00e9note un philosophe politique de la renaissance italienne et exemplifie toutes sortes de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s d\u2019image (de couleur, de texture, d\u2019ordre) qui pourront servir \u00e0 le classer comme tel ou tel type d\u2019image, appartenant \u00e0 telle ou telle p\u00e9riode historique, attribuable \u00e0 tel ou tel artiste.<\/p>\n<p>Bien s\u00fbr, ce qu\u2019une image exemplifie comme propri\u00e9t\u00e9s, d\u00e9pend fortement du contexte. Un m\u00eame symbole peut fonctionner diff\u00e9remment selon la mani\u00e8re dont il est re\u00e7u et con\u00e7u. Un dessin de fleur, quoiqu\u2019il d\u00e9note par ailleurs, peut dans certains contextes exemplifier certaines propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de dessin ou de touche. Ce sont ces propri\u00e9t\u00e9s qui permettent d\u2019identifier des styles picturaux et qui donnent une valeur esth\u00e9tique au symbole. En revanche, dans d\u2019autres contextes, le dessin va exemplifier des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de composition ou d\u2019ordre entre les diff\u00e9rents \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la fleur. Nous pouvons dire pour cette raison que le dessin sert d\u2019exemple pour d\u00e9signer une esp\u00e8ce botanique plut\u00f4t qu\u2019une autre. Pour un historien enfin, ce m\u00eame dessin va exemplifier des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s temporelles&#160;: avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 telle p\u00e9riode, etc. Dans ce cas, le dessin fonctionne selon d\u2019autres normes \u00e9pist\u00e9miques encore. Ce qu\u2019une image exemplifie exactement comme propri\u00e9t\u00e9s est la plupart du temps d\u00e9fini par l\u2019usage.<\/p>\n<p>Le r\u00f4le fondamental de l\u2019exemplification en sciences et dans les arts a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en avant r\u00e9cemment par de nombreuses \u00e9tudes en \u00e9pist\u00e9mologie et en histoire de l\u2019art. Certaines questions, bien s\u00fbr, demeurent irr\u00e9solues&#160;: Pouvons-nous fixer des crit\u00e8res qui permettent de d\u00e9finir exactement, et dans toutes les situations, le genre de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s qu\u2019exemplifie une image&#160;? Pouvons-nous clarifier le r\u00f4le que jouent l\u2019habitude, le contexte et les usages dans la d\u00e9termination de cette voie r\u00e9f\u00e9rentielle&#160;? L\u2019usage joue-t-il un r\u00f4le plus accentu\u00e9 dans l\u2019exemplification que dans la d\u00e9notation&#160;? Qu\u2019est-ce que cela change lorsque l\u2019exemplification est imag\u00e9e ou textuelle&#160;? Certaines images endossent-elles plus que d\u2019autres un r\u00f4le exemplificationnel (images scientifiques, artistiques ou informationnelles)&#160;? Une image peut-elle n\u2019endosser qu\u2019une fonction d\u2019exemple, sans d\u00e9noter quoi que soit (un peu \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re d\u2019un \u00e9chantillon)&#160;? Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019\u00eatre un mauvais exemple&#160;? Ce qu\u2019une image exemplifie comme propri\u00e9t\u00e9s peut-il \u00e9voluer dans le temps&#160;? Cela change-t-il quoi que ce soit \u00e0 l\u2019identit\u00e9 de l\u2019image et \u00e9ventuellement \u00e0 sa compr\u00e9hension ou sa conservation (s\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019une \u0153uvre d\u2019art)&#160;? Que se passe-t-il lorsqu\u2019une image exemplifie m\u00e9taphoriquement une propri\u00e9t\u00e9&#160;? Comment ce concept \u00ab&#160;d\u2019exemplification&#160;\u00bb permet-il d\u2019\u00e9clairer d\u2019autres concepts d\u00e9cisifs de la science des images ou de l\u2019\u00e9pist\u00e9mologie&#160;: exemplarit\u00e9, style pictural, objectivit\u00e9, information&#160;?<\/p>\n<p>Nous aimerions que ces journ\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9tude embrassent \u00e0 la fois des \u00e9tudes empiriques et des analyses conceptuelles sur l\u2019exemplification imag\u00e9e. D\u2019un point de vue empirique, on pourra se demander quelles sont les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s que doivent avoir les images issues de certains laboratoires (nanosciences, astrophysique, chirurgie ou pal\u00e9ontologie) en vue de constituer des exemples&#160;? Qu&rsquo;exemplifient-elles&#160;? Pourquoi&#160;? Ces interrogations pourraient bien s\u00fbr, avec un \u00e9gal souci d\u2019empiricit\u00e9, \u00eatre transpos\u00e9es \u00e0 d\u2019autres formes d\u2019images (les croquis et dessins d\u2019architectes, les diagrammes, les cartes, les images publicitaires et bien s\u00fbr les images artistiques).
