Des films libanais r\u00e9alis\u00e9s avant 1975 aux cin\u00e9mas d\u2019Iraq, du Y\u00e9men, de Palestine, du Soudan ou d\u2019ailleurs, il y a plusieurs causes qui ont men\u00e9 \u00e0 la perte des films et de leurs traces dans l\u2019Histoire&#160;: les causes environnementales et structurelles&#160;; le manque d\u2019investissement dans des moyens appropri\u00e9s de stockage, de pr\u00e9servation et de maintenance&#160;; les films perdus \u00e0 cause de la censure ou des ravages des conflits r\u00e9gionaux ou du temps&#160;; les films pass\u00e9s de mode ou qui n\u2019ont plus trouv\u00e9 de circuits de distribution, ou qui n\u2019ont pu \u00eatre distribu\u00e9 que de mani\u00e8re \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re sur des cha\u00eenes de t\u00e9l\u00e9vision ou des plateformes d\u00e9sormais disparues. Alors que, comme le note Jacques Derrida, l\u2019archive sert les structures de pouvoir et joue un r\u00f4le de contr\u00f4le, elle renvoie \u00e9galement \u00e0 un espace \u2013 parfois digital \u2013 o\u00f9 la mati\u00e8re du pass\u00e9 est recueillie et sauv\u00e9e. Pourtant, malgr\u00e9, et en prenant compte de, ces limitations structurelles au croisement du pouvoir et du savoir, les archives demeurent essentielles pour la recherche et toute tentative de d\u00e9velopper des reconstructions complexes du pass\u00e9. La raret\u00e9 officielle ou officieuse d\u2019archives du film bien entretenues \u00e0 travers le monde arabe met \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9preuve toute disposition \u00e0 comprendre le pass\u00e9 cin\u00e9matographique des pays concern\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>La revue Regards sollicite des articles traitant du d\u00e9fi d\u2019\u00e9crire l\u2019histoire du cin\u00e9ma parfois sans les films eux-m\u00eames, et souvent sans archives. From most of the films made in Lebanon prior to 1975 to the cinemas of Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere, there are many reasons why films and their histories may have been lost to current memory. From structural and environmental issues and the lack of investment in proper storage facilities and maintenance, to films lost to censorship and forgotten in the ravages of conflicts and time as they fell out of fashion or did not find distribution circuits&#160;; or, indeed, found them only on ephemeral channels, like now-defunct TV stations or fleetingly-lived digital sites. While, as Jacques Derrida wrote, the archive conveys both structures of power and gatekeeping, it also gestures to a space \u2013 perhaps online \u2013 where the materials of the past are collected. Yet, despite and with awareness of these structural limitations at the intersections of power and knowledge, archives remain crucial to our ability to research and develop sophisticated narratives of the past. A dearth of official and unofficial well-maintained film archives across the Arab world compounds our ability to understand the cinematic past.<\/p>\n<p>The October 2021 special issue of <em>Regards &#8211; Revue des arts du spectacle <\/em>(Universit\u00e9 Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth)\u00a0solicits articles on the problematics of writing cinema history sometimes without the films themselves, and often without archives.
